TATA IPL 2022 – Match no 29 – another loss for Chennai Super Kings

Once again, Chennai Super Kings faltered. It was another loss of the toss and of the game. The never-say-die attitude appears to be missing. Robin Uthappa went cheaply as did Moeen Ali but Rituraj Gaikwad was in form. He held the fort with Ambati Rayudu and even Ravindra Jadeja, the captain, chipped in to put up a total that was not easy to defend. Especially against Gujarat Titans – the table toppers at present who have 5 wins from 6 matches.

In reply, GT won with one ball remaining. David Miller who remained not out with 94 (including 6 sixers) destroyed the bowling attack. Of course, Dwayne Bravo did pick up 3 wickets but a loss is a loss. CSK won the title last year and are the defenders. They have a really tough job ahead. They must gel as a team to remain relevant.

TATA IPL 2022 – newcomer Gujarat Titans tops the points table after Match no 25

T20 cricket is unpredictable and no team can imagine the upsets that can turn a match on its head. Until now, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings shared the honors but this time, they have become also-rans. The former lost all the five matches they played, the latter won only one match out of five. In contrast, Gujarat Titans, a newcomer, won 4 of the 5 matches they played. Lucknow Super Giants, another newcomer, won 3 of the 5 matches it played so far. The composition of these teams was of a few old timers who had represented other franchises earlier. They have with them others promising players and, together they are on a roll.

One probable factor for the state of affairs in IPL 2022 could be restriction on the venues. This means the teams lose the direct support of their local fans. The players also lose out on variety in their lifestyles vis-à-vis cuisine, sightseeing etcetera. Moreover, many of the teams lost some of their most coveted players in the auction. These teams had to rebuild their teams. Let us hope the competition becomes more tense as the stalwarts buckle up their belts and try to prove their worth.

TATA IPL 2022 – Match no 11 – Chennai Super Kings lose their 3rd consecutive game

TATA IPL 2022 – venue of Match no 11 between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings was the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. CSK won the trophy in IPL 2021 but in IPL 2022, they have lost their first two matches. The latest loss against Punjab Kings makes it 3 consecutive losses. The team has a new captain Ravindra Jadeja at the helm and he has to think out of the box to evolve his strategies. After winning the toss, CSK asked Punjab to bat. They made 180 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Mayank Agarwal failed to impress. Liam Livingstone made 60 with 5 sixers. Shikhar Dhawan made 33 and Jitesh Sharma made 26 with 3 sixers.

In reply, CSK could score only 126 in 18 overs. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad failed yet again and three batsmen went without scoring a single run. They were Captain Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali and Dwayne Bravo. Shivam Dube did score 57 runs with 3 sixers and M S Dhoni made 23 with one sixer but CSK needed much more. Liam Livingstone of Punjab was Player of the Match.

CSK did seize the opportunity to pile up the runs and was 210 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs with run rate of 10 plus. However, it was not enough. TATA IPL 2022 – KKR beats CSK in Match No. 1

The inaugural match of TATA IPL 2022 was between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. KKR won the toss, asked CSK to bat first, and won the match. Both teams had new captains. Ravindra Jadeja was captain of CSK and Shreas Iyer was captain of KKR. In hindsight, it seems Jadeja could have innovated and tried to win the match. He could have brought in Dwayne Bravo a bit earlier and the score might have been more respectable. That might have helped. However, what is done cannot be undone.

The first match of TATA IPL 2022 went to KKR. CSK put up a very low score of 131 and its opener Rituraj Gaikwad perished for a duck. His partner followed him after a few balls and others put up a gallant fight. The 50 not out of M. S. Dhoni showed he can still play his shots but the bowlers of KKR kept bowling dot balls. Umesh Yadav got 2 wickets while Varun Chakravorty and Andre Russel got one wicket each. It was certainly not the sort of start CSK wanted.

Anyway, KKR ensured a win with 9 balls left in spite of the bowling of Dwayne Bravo. He got three wickets for 20 runs. The wickets were of Venkatesh Iyer, Sam Billings and Nitish Rana. Man of the Match was Umesh Yadav for his 2 for 20.

Suspected heart attack snatches Shane Warne (52) from the world of cricket

It was a sad day for the world of cricket when Shane Warne breathed his last in Thailand. He was on holiday. The legendary leg spinner was one of cricket's all-time greats and was only 52 years. His manager said he died of a suspected heart attack. The exact cause of death is not known as yet but the police were not treating it as suspicious. Warne claimed 708 Test wickets over a span of his 15-year career for Australia. That was between 1992 and 2007. Wisden named him as one of the Five Cricketers of the Century.
In 2008, he shifted gears. He came to India to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Rajasthan Royals selected him to captain their franchise in the inaugural season of the IPL. He ensured a win for the franchise in the final against Chennai Super Kings. During retirement, Warne became a trenchant commentator, primarily for Fox Sports in Australia. It will be a great loss for the world of cricket. May his soul rest in peace.
