Star Wars Episode VIII to get delayed till December 2017

Disney has announced that VIII episode of Star Wars would be delayed - it was supposed to debut on 26 May 2017 but the revised date for it to hit he cinemas would be 15 December 2017 or seven months later than its initial debut date. Episode VIII will start filming in London next month.

This would be bad news for fans of Star Wars and the company has not given any precise reason for the delay but speculation is rife that writer-director Rian Johnson is reworking the script for Episode VIII. Usually, Hollywood blockbusters are released during the summer months when they draw the biggest audiences in recent years. But, the success of The Force Awakens, released worldwide last month, has already become the highest-grossing release in North America with takings of $861m.
The Force Awakens is the third-biggest global release in history, bringing in $1.88bn at the box office to date. Episode VIII is likely to continue the tale of new characters Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Moreover, franchise veterans Carrie Fisher (General Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) also are expected to return. Of course, Disney has not commented on casting.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - fans wait will be over

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is ready for release - it is due to be shown publicly for the first time in Los Angeles on Monday and will premiers in London on 16 December. Hectic preparations are in their closing stages for the premiere of one of the most-awaited sequels in cinema history. The film is the seventh in the series and the first which, apart from his role in creating some characters, does not involve George Lucas.

The film's stars, including the original 1977 cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, are expected to join director and co-writer J J Abrams on the red carpet at one of the three cinemas showing it. There are a new generation of actors also in the cast - many of them British. They are Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Andy Serkis.
The precise venue of the premieres in the USA are being kept under wraps until the last minute, but they are expected to take place at LA's TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre and the El Capitan Theatre.
In order to keep up the suspense, dozens of workers are busy erecting a mammoth opaque tent lining four blocks of Hollywood Boulevard. Incidentally, the TCL Chinese Theatre, one of the cinemas on the Boulevard, had hosted the premiere of the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
Needless to say, fans have been camping outside for several days to ensure they do not miss out on getting the best seat in the theatre when the movie goes on general release on Friday.

Nearly 300 die-hard fans of Star Wars queued up through the night to be among the lay hands on toys from the new film ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in the series. Some of the fans were dressed up as characters from the films and they waited patiently outside UK shops which opened at midnight to launch the merchandise.
The toys on sale include action figures, toy lightsabers and fancy dress costumes and the event has been dubbed "Force Friday".

The film sees original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew return to the screen in the roles of Hans Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Chewbacca.
Disney has bought Lucasfilm for $4bn in October 2012 and this would be Disney's first of three Star Wars instalments as it expands the universe originally devised by George Lucas in the 1970s. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will be released in the UK on 18 December.
