MTV's Video Music Awards in New York - Beyonce walked away with top honours


Beyonce walked away with top honors at MTV's Video Music Awards in New York and rapper Drake got tongues wagging by professing his "love" for Rihanna. Beyonce got the video of the year and best female video and, she also delivered a show-stopping 16-minute performance of tracks from her hit album Lemonade.
The Single Ladies singer came at the event with her four-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement that included Sybrina Fulton, the mother of murdered teenager Trayvon Martin.

After winning the award Beyonce thanked her daughter and "incredible" husband Jay Z for their support. Rihanna, the 28-year-old Barbadian singer, performed four separate medleys of her biggest songs throughout the show after she was given the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award - this is the MTV equivalent of a lifetime achievement honor. Drake presented her with the Moonman trophy - Drake is her long-time collaborator and there are rumors of a love interest.
Rihanna, on her part, thanked her family, friends and hometown of Saint Michael in Barbados for helping her succeed throughout her 11-year-career.
Kanye West came on stage for a six-minute speech before introducing the video for his new song Fade. In the course of his speech, he compared himself to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Walt Disney and also talked about his recent war of words with Taylor Swift.
Drake won best hip hop video for Hotline Bling, but did not collect his trophy on stage since he was stuck in traffic.
