A recent study conducted by the University of California has revealed some interesting figures – out of the 100 highest-grossing films in 2014 only 1.9% were directed by women and only 12% featured female protagonists.
Patricia Arquette had used the occasion of her Oscar acceptance speech to highlight the pay gap between male and female stars. Emily Blunt, on her part, has called for more female action heroes and Jessica Chastain has revealed that many roles offered to her are overly sexualized.
Anne Hathaway’s observations came in the course of a press tour for her new movie The Intern in which she plays the role of Jules Ostin, whose husband is a stay-at-home dad while she runs a hugely-successful online fashion retailer. It co-stars Robert De Niro, who works as a 'senior intern' at the company.
Hathaway has added that the concept - written by Nancy Meyers – is an indication that Hollywood has started to tackle sexism on screen.
