Adele creates a record - her latest album 25 has gone platinum in the US

The British star Adele's latest album 25 has gone diamond platinum in the US within a year after it was released. It has sold more than 10 million copies in America alone and she was awarded with a diamond plaque in New York after performing the last of six sell-out shows in Madison Square Garden.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 28 September 2016.
Earlier, her 2011 album, 21, had also reached diamond status and as per the Recording Industry Association of America, that album has sold more than 14 million copies to date. It is a record of sorts because no other artist has managed to go diamond platinum once, let alone twice, in 12 years.
Before Adele, the last person to sell 10 million copies of one album was Usher in 2004 - with Eminem and Norah Jones also securing diamond status with their 2002 records.
Adele's decision to keep '25' off streaming services for seven months after its release could have given her sales a boost.
The success of her third studio album, which features singles including Hello and Send My Love (To Your New Lover), has helped cement her status as the century's top-selling artist and, it has been announced that Adele was nominated in four categories at MTV's Europe Music Awards. These include best song for Hello, and best female act.

Mark Wahlberg talks about movie on Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig was involved in an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in which eleven persons lost their lives. The explosion resulted in oil spills of unimaginable magnitude and a film on the subject is due to be released in UK cinemas.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 27 September 2016.
Speaking on the film, Mark Wahlberg has said he hopes that big oil companies will learn from the Deepwater Horizon explosion. The Oscar-nominated actor enacts the role of Mike Williams who was the last person to make it out alive from the BP oil rig.
The Deepwater Horizon explosion caused the worst oil spill in US history and, the movie teaches the importance of being calm under pressure. He expressed hope that enough has been done to ensure that such a disaster never happens again.
The lifestyle of oil rig workers also struck a chord for Wahlberg on a personal level because his job also takes him away from his family on a regular basis.

Tension on the Indo-Pak border has its effect on Bollywood movies

There are a number of Bollywood movies in the pipeline in which Pakistani actors play some roles and, the ongoing tension with India's neighbor is creating problems for Indian movie makers. The right-wing brigade in Maharashtra, namely, the Raj Thackeray led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has set a 48-hour deadline on Friday for Mumbai-based Pakistani artistes to leave the country.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 24 September 2016.
MNS has categorically said that artistes from Pakistan, who have made Mumbai their home, should quit the city and the state of Maharashtra within next 48 hours. In the opinion of the agitators, actors like Fawad Khan (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) and Mahira Khan (Shah Rukh Khan's costar in `Raees') are hijacking opportunities available to Indian artistes.
Incidentally, both the actors have big-budget starrers due for release next month. Actors Fawad Khan ('Madamji') and Ali Zafar ('Dear Zindagi') too will have to face the wrath of the MNS who will stop their shoots mid-way. In addition, party activists will ensure that films starring Pakistani artistes are not released either in Mumbai or in the state.
Mumbai police have assured that the actors will be provided security if required. All foreign nationals, who are in Mumbai on valid documents provided by Government of India, need not worry. Adequate protection will be extended to them as and when required.

Hollywood inequality - women hardly get a chance to speak

That there is gender inequality in Hollywood has been revealed from a study of top 100 films released last year - the study has shown that 31.4 per cent of named or speaking roles went to women compared to 68.6 per cent for men. Also, just 32 per cent depicted a woman as a lead - the rest were men. And, to cap it all, just five films portrayed women over 45 in lead roles compared to 26 movies with a man of similar age in a similar part.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 8 September 2016.
The study was conducted by the University of Southern California and in view of the facts above, it can be said that Hollywood is a place of ‘pervasive and systematic’ inequality. Women were more than three times as likely as men to be shown in revealing or sexy clothing and hardly 19 per cent of the directors were female, compared to 81 per cent who were male.
The study concludes that despite the recent controversies over diversity in Hollywood and equal pay, women are still ‘grossly underrepresented’ in the industry. Popular films in 2015 with strong female roles like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, had apparently led to a ‘misplaced optimism’ that things had changed.

Sonakshi Sinha breaks bones and throws punches in Akira

Akira is a movie of a different kind. Directed by A R Murugadoss, its cast includes Sonakshi Sinha, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anurag Kashyap, Amit Sadh. It unleashes the actor in Sonakshi Sinha.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 2 September 2016.
Akira, in Sanskrit, means graceful strength and Sonakshi Sinha goes about fighting violence against women as well as cliches of how actresses in Bollywood are supposed to be. She plays the role of a college student from a dysfunctional family. She is short on temper and quick to let her fists do the talking and is, in short, a misfit in her small town.
Her parents send her off to Mumbai in the fond hope that the big city will calm her down. But, she just cannot handle violence against women and wrongs of any kind. Therefore, she finds herself in a mess where she is pitted against Anurag Kashyap’s corrupt, coke-snorting police officer. However, she throws the punches - unlike male heroes like a Khan or a Kumar and beat the baddies to a pulp.
Sonakshi Sinha must give her audience more of the actor inside her instead of the pretty girl dancing with the star of the moment.
