Bollywood movie 'Airlift' is about evacuation of 170,000 people from Iraq in 1990

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar's latest offering is 'Airlift' - it is undoubtedly a different type of movie and not the run-of-the-mill affair that Bollywood dishes out. "airlift' is the story of evacuation of 170,00 Indians who were trapped in Iraq in 1990 when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 25 January 2016.
The release of the film 'Airlift' just before India celebrates its 67th Republic day augers well for the film and it is sure to do good business as patriotic fervor grips the country.
Airlift is a story of one of the largest air evacuations of people in the world when Iraqi president Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait on 2 August 1990 and as many as 170,000 Indians were trapped there. All of them wanted to leave and it caught the government of India unawares. The Indian mission in Kuwait was shifted to Basra in Iraq due to security reasons and the Indians were left stranded.
That is when Akshay Kumar steps in. He plays the role of Ranjit Katiyal, a wealthy businessman with good connections in Kuwait. He finds himself homeless and sets out to organize and facilitate the evacuation.
The Indian government did not want to invite the wrath of the international community by making deals with Hussein but the Indian foreign minister did get an assurance of safe passage for the Indians from the Iraqi president. However, there was no mechanism on ground to evacuate such a huge number.
It was the wealthy businessman who arranged it all. Every day thousands of stranded Indians were taken into Jordan, from where they were repatriated. However, there is no mention of the contribution of this businessman in any official records.
Except for a few thousand, who decided to stay back in Kuwait, all the remaining were taken out before the start of Operation Desert Shield. It involved a total of 488 Air India flights and a few military aircraft and the evacuation of all Indians was done in 59 days.
In contrast, the "Berlin Airlift" at the end of the Second World War was the evacuation of 48,000 people over a period of two years.

'Tamanna' - cricket based TV serial about a woman cricketer

Cricket is a game all Indians love and, for a change, a new TV serial is coming that is all about a woman cricketer. It is bound to be a different genre of soap as compared to the routine run-of-the-mill soaps of the saas-bahu type which seems to go on and on.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 22 January 2016.
The story is all about an aspiring women cricketer, who travels through different phases in her life to achieve her goals. It features Anuja Sathe as the protagonist Dharaa Solanki. 'Tamanna' is a finite series and is touted to challenge the mentality that a woman’s dreams come with an expiry date.
There is an assurance from the producer that it will be a show with a difference - usually, one sees a lot of ‘saas-bahu’ talks in other soap opera but, in 'Tamanna' such talks would be much less.
Moreover, it has been shot in various locations across Gujarat and Mumbai and will feature Ketki Dave, Kiran Karmarkar, Harsh Chhaya and Vishal Gandhi in the cast.
Anuja has previously worked in few Marathi shows ans is now making her debut in Hindi TV with 'Tamannna'. It would be an inspiration for women who feel that their dreams end after marriage and motherhood.

Singer Cher to donate 180,000 bottles of drinking water to Flint in Michigan

The residents of the city of Flint in Michigan are struggling for drinking water since 2014 because available water is contaminated with lead pollution. Hence, singer and actress Cher has decided to send 180,000 bottles of fresh water for its 100,000 residents.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 17 January 2016.
Cher is an Oscar winner and has said that this is a tragedy of staggering proportion.
It seems Flint's 100,000 residents have not had access to safe drinking water ever since 2014, when officials had begun to draw water from the Flint River as a temporary cost-cutting measure while a pipeline was built from Lake Huron. Unfortunately, the corrosive water was not treated properly, which led to the problem.
The foul-smelling water is making people vomit, break out in rashes and lose their hair. The state officials had initially downplayed concerns over levels of lead, but then committed to rectify the situation by sanctioning $10.6m to reconnect the city with Detroit and to install filters, testing and other services.
Flint has returned to using Detroit water in October.
President Barack Obama has signed an emergency declaration paving the way for federal aid to deal with the crisis. As such, Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide water, water filters, water filter cartridges and water test kits among other supplies, for up to three months.
The 181,440 bottles that Cher is donating are expected to reach the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan from Wednesday.

Justin Bieber embraces another controversy in Mayan ruins

Canadian singer 21year-old Justin Bieber embraced yet another controversy when he and his entourage were ordered off from an archaeological site in Mexico after he apparently tried to climb onto the ruins. The incident happened at the 13th-century Mayan site of Tulum on Mexico's Caribbean coast.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 9 January 2016.
The official who ordered them out did not reveal which of the structures Justin Bieber had allegedly breached, but said he was "asked to leave". Visitors to this historical ancient site are allowed on some pre-Hispanic pyramids in Mexico. However, those that are considered to be vulnerable are either roped off or have 'no entry' signs on them.
The controversy with Bieber came when it was confirmed that he was the first artist to occupy the top three spots of the British singles chart. These were Love Yourself which was at number one for a fifth week, followed by Sorry at number two and What Do You Mean at three.
This must have boosted his moral and, in joy, he breached the rules.
Incidentally, the last artist to have three singles in the top five was John Lennon in 1981 with Imagine, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and (Just Like) Starting Over following his killing.
In his short career, Justin Bieber has caused a number of upsets in Latin America. In 2013, he upset Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto when he said he had met him and his family before a show and, subsequently, corrected himself in a tweet, saying he had been introduced to them at a "meet and greet".
The same year, he abandoned a concert in Buenos Aires after complaining of food poisoning and, a week earlier he had ended a concert early in Brazil - he walked off the stage after he was hit with a plastic bottle.

25 Bollywood celebs lose police cover - including Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan

The Mumbai Police have trimmed the security cover of 25 Bollywood celebrities - among them are two of the Khans Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. In a major overhaul, the Mumbai Police have either downgraded or nixed the security cover for the celebrities. The reason cited by the authorities is that the move was because of the need to nix ‘unwanted’ security cover.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 8 January 2016.
The police have clarified that round-the-clock security to Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan had been provided - this cover included two armed constables and an armed guard on two shifts and an armed escort vehicle. However, following a re-assessment, the escorts and the armed in-charge have been withdrawn. Henceforth, only two armed constables will cover them in two shifts.
It seems security cover was being provided to around 40 Bollywood celebrities and, the list has now been trimmed and reduced to around 15 personalities against whom there are genuine threat perception.
Of the 25 personalities whose security has now been fully withdrawn are Bollywood director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, director Rajkumar Hirani, director Farah Khan and producer siblings Ali and Karim Morani.
The security cover will continue to remain for Akshay Kumar and producers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt.
However, for Lata Mangeshkar, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, viewed as iconic figures, they will continue to enjoy round-the-clock security cover, apart from a police escort.

Aamir Khan no longer the face of Incredible India

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is no longer the face of Incredible India - Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma has announced that Aamir Khan has ceased to be the mascot for the ‘Incredible India’ campaign after 10 years.
While many might see this removal as a result of his comments on the intolerance issue, the tourism ministry has clarified that they had not hired the actor. The hiring was done by an agency. Since the contract with that McCann Worldwide agency no longer exists, automatically Aamir's contract is no longer valid.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 7 January 2016.
McCann Worldwide agency had been given the contract for the ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ campaign. They had hired Aamir for the job and, since the contract with the agency is over, Aamir is out. In his connection, Aamir has said that he respects the decision of the government to “discontinue” his services and has also made it clear that he has never charged anything for the task.
The new brand ambassador could be Amitabh Bachhan.

Emily Blunt talks about her upcoming movie "The Girl on the Train"

Emily Blunt is 32-year-old and has acted in action-heavy roles in the past, but, in her opinion, her titular role on "The Girl on the Train," is "the most challenging thing" she has ever done.
The story of the movie is based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins and, in it, Emily portrays the role of Rachel Watson. In trying to cope with the pain of her divorce with alcohol, she creates a fictional bond with a couple she sees out the window of her train commute. Suddenly, she sees something shocking and, gradually, gets entwined with the mystery that follows.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 5 January 2015.
Describing the character she portrays, she says that she is the lead character who is the most unreliable witness in the world because she’s a drunk. But, she is right and nobody believes her. The idea of playing a part like that where you just feel like you’re drowning is exciting. She had never played a blackout drunk before and, obviously, this was a new challenge for her.
‘The Girl on the Train’ is planned to be released in the US theaters on October 7.
